The Best Behavioral Technicians Share These Features
Being a Behavioral Technician requires the same skill set as many other jobs, like being detail-oriented and hard-working. However, there are five features that make BTs stand out in their field.
Professionalism
As a BT, you will be tasked with visiting your clients’ homes and interacting with parents, children and on occasion, with extended family members. Because of this, BTs should always carry a professional demeanor that allows them to succeed within their role. Being professional includes dressing appropriately, communicating efficiently with family members, and being on time.
Empathy
Having respect for others and empathizing with them in times of need is crucial for those working as BTs. Empathy means being present, letting go of biases, listening with the goal of understanding, and acknowledging people’s feelings.
Cultural Competence
Although BTs are not expected to be experts in every culture, they must be respectful of different ways of living and values within other's homes. As a BT, you’ll step into different households, and will be exposed to other languages, traditions, and practices. Cultural Competence is an important skill to connect with clients and their families.
Patience
Due to the nature of the job, BTs need to be patient in many ways. They should be the first to understand that it might take some time to make progress and convey that to the family. ABA is an evidence-based technique; which, will likely require tweaks and adjustments as part of the process.
Curiosity
It is crucial for those seeking a career as a BT to be curious. Your sense of curiosity will drive your work and help you find the right solutions for your clients. If you constantly question the world around you, this might be the job for you.
